  Stayed at the George Hotel. The room was nice, lovely character (including a radio in the headboard, a cool little feature that seemed to die in the 80s). The attached bar does some great ales, I can heartily recommend the Smuggler, which is nice and hoppy with a dark colour and perfectly accompanied the small, comfy interior of the bar.
  
  The central location means it's a 1 minute walk to the Corn Exchange theatre, and all the other small-town facilities Wallingford offers.
  
  Bistro George is the restaurant affiliated with the hotel, which offers a small but delicious range of what I would call "fancy home cooked food". I had the soup of the day (Tomato and Basil, nice) and a roasted duck breast in a passion fruit sauce (? Is it a sauce if it's based on sweet fruit? A coulis? Marmalade? Whatever it was is tasted good) with roast potatoes and associated roast veg.
  
  My only other comment is that, as the hotel is a hotel, the bar was a sort of travellers club. While I was there there was a scattering of locals and a single large group, but this didn't lend a great deal of atmosphere. Maybe that was the feel of the place, maybe it was the fact the FA Cup was on, maybe it was the 3 other pubs/bars in the vicinity. Maybe I just like a bar with local drunk.
  
  If you're looking at staying here, have at it. A meal in the Bistro, then walk off into town and buy a ticket for whatever's going on in the Corn Exchange, have yourself a good night and relax into the firm but comfortably so bed until it's breakfast time. You'll have a good time, just don't plan your whole night around the bar.
